Personally, I had hit rock bottom.
There was a time, many years ago, I felt just like this. I was lost, scared, alone and in the grips of despair. I had just hit rock bottom and my whole world had come crashing down around me.
Now spending my days, weeks and months curled up in a ball crying and wishing my life would just end. It was the darkest and loneliest I had ever been in my whole life. I was 52 years old.
I hated feeling like this.
Having had just left an abusive relationship, closed a business I had purchased 3 years prior and declared bankruptcy, I felt like the biggest failure ever.
I didn’t even want to talk to anyone.
I was too embarrassed with all my failures to face anyone.
My Life-Changing Moment
After 6 months of feeling sorry for myself something finally hit me.
I was no longer interested in wallowing in self-pity anymore and I knew I had to do something to turn my life around.
I realized the only way for me to go was up.
So I started absorbing as many free self-help ebooks as I could get my hands on and started listening to motivational YouTube videos.
I had made the decision that it was time to change my life.
I understood that if I wanted things to be different it was up to me to do that.
And then this happened
One day I decided to do something I’d never done before but had always wanted to.
I went to the homeless mission and applied to become a volunteer. They accepted me immediately and my life changed in ways I never thought possible.
It was then that I realized that there was great power in acts of service.
I had no clue.
I’ve always been a kind person but always expected something in return. I realized that this, in fact, isn’t kindness, it’s business.
Realizing this, I started doing kindness instead. I started helping others and the more I did, the faster my life improved.
Learning to do things from the heart
I was loving my newfound role at the homeless mission as a volunteer.
My job there was to pour coffee and feed dinner but a few months in, I found myself doing things outside of my normal duties for the homeless people.
I also started helping others and doing random acts of service and kindness for lots of people.
Day by day, I was becoming happier and not so lonely anymore.
I was done wallowing in self-pity and loving my new way of life.
5 Powerful Acts of Service You Can Do Today
If you still think kindness doesn’t change lives, try doing any or all of these 5 simple yet powerful acts of service and watch how you can change lives, including yours.
Choose an organization or charity that speaks to your heart.
A nursing home, a homeless shelter or even a pet shelter.
You can volunteer for as little as 2 hours a month or 1 hour a week.
2. Pay for someone’s coffee
If you happen to be in a drive-thru window at your local coffee shop, pay for the guy behind you!
I love doing this.
They have no idea who you are and it will surprise and delight them!
3. Tell someone they look beautiful/handsome today
Though this isn’t necessarily an act of service in so much as it is kindness, doing this to a total stranger will make their day.
You may be the only one who told them that today.
4. Help an elderly person
If one of your neighbors happens to be elderly go visit them and see if they need help or anything from the grocery store?
Maybe sit and look at old pictures with them!
5. Donate old things
You know the saying, one person’s trash is someone else’s treasure.
Well, the fact of the matter is, there are so many people in need these days.
Don’t throw away your old things.
Give them away.
They will come in good use to someone!
Helping Others Heals Us Too
There are so many people in need these days and even though there are plenty of charities and organizations helping, it’s still not enough.
It is up to us to do our part to make the world a better place and when we take part, it enriches our lives as well.
I have met so many amazing people since I started helping others. People that I normally would have never met if I hadn’t decided to start doing random acts of service.
My role as a volunteer back in Sudbury 5 years ago has taken me all the way to Guatemala to help the poor and hungry here.
You just never know what doors will open for you when you start doing kindness.
Not only that, if you do one act of service every day, at the end of one year you will have changed at least 365 lives.
Isn’t that amazing?
