Role Models – Who Are They And Why Do We Need Them?

How do you define a role model? Is it someone you look up to? A mentor? A teacher?

Without realizing it, you may actually be a role model! With that in mind, it’s important to know how and when you’ll be called on to lead the way for others.

Here’s why we need more role models and how you can become one.

Who Are Some Role Models?

Anyone can be a role model. And by anyone, we really do mean anyone.

Real people, like religious leaders, teachers, and athletes can be role models. But also fictional characters, like superheroes, can act as role models.

In fact, did you know that children often look up to their parents are role models?

Does your child see you as their role model? Most likely.

Many people equate good parenting with being a good role model. But there’s a lot more to it than that.

Definition Of Parenting

Simply put, we can describe parenting as the act of raising a child.

But despite this clear and transparent definition, the reality is much more complex.

A good parent must know how to establish routine and consistency while balancing playfulness, exploration, and communication.

There’s no one size fits all when it comes to parenting. No right or wrong answer.

As a matter of fact, there are four major parenting styles to choose from: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful.

Being a parent is a process which requires constant adjustment to the circumstances, putting what’s best for your children above all else.

If you’re looking for some insight on how to empower your kids to become extraordinary, Jon and Missy Butcher, Authors of the Mindvalley Lifebook Program, have some radical ideas on parenting.

Who Is The Best Role Model In The World?

This is very difficult to define for a number of reasons. Why? Because everyone’s idea of an ideal role model is subjective.

Someone you consider to be an excellent role model might not strike the same chord with your partner, sibling, or neighbor.

In fact, role models are heavily dependent on their target audience, which is impacted by both age and culture.

Some standout role models over the course of history include:

  • Mahatma Gandhi
  • Leonardo da Vinci
  • Mother Teresa
  • Martin Luther King
  • Joan of Arc

Why do we need role models?

Role models encourage us to become better people. They lead by example, living extraordinary lives that inspire others.

Some role models we follow consciously. Others act as role models in our lives on a more subconscious level.

But surrounding yourself with positive, uplifting people is sure to have an effect on the way you live your life.

Our role models shape and define us. So work hard to surround yourself with people that inspire you.

How do you choose a role model?

An effective role model depends on the audience. So choosing an effective role model depends on what you personally find inspiring.

Perhaps you’re most inspired by the dedication and performance of an athlete. Or the tenacity and showmanship or a performer. Or the knowledge and wisdom of a spiritual leader.

At the end of the day, we use role models to better ourselves. So choose a role model that encourages you to be the best version of yourself.
