Feeling constantly tired? You’re not alone. Many of us struggle with chronic fatigue, and the solution might be simpler than you think. This article explores the true root cause of low energy, based on insights from Dr. Eric Berg’s video, “Why You Are TIRED All the Time”, and offers practical steps to regain your energy.

The Powerhouse Inside You: Mitochondria

At the heart of your energy production are mitochondria, tiny organelles within your cells. Think of them as your body’s power plants, converting food into usable energy. But here’s the catch: it’s not the food itself that gives you energy, but Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), a form of cellular energy produced by mitochondria.

When your mitochondria aren’t functioning at full capacity, you feel it in the form of fatigue. Whether you’re loading up on coffee, vitamins, or energy drinks, it won’t solve the problem if your mitochondria aren’t producing enough ATP.

Understanding ATP: Your Body’s Energy Currency

ATP is your body’s primary energy source, created through a process involving the Krebs cycle. During this cycle, nutrients from the food you eat are broken down, and electrons are extracted to generate ATP. However, your body doesn’t store ATP; it’s made on demand, which means it’s essential to keep your mitochondria working efficiently.

In a healthy body, the ATP-producing enzymes spin rapidly, creating thousands of ATP molecules per minute. But when your diet is poor or you have health issues, this process slows down, leading to feelings of exhaustion.

Why Nutrients Matter

To keep your mitochondria humming, they need specific nutrients like B vitamins, magnesium, folic acid, selenium, and coenzyme Q10. Without these, your ATP production stalls. Unfortunately, modern diets are often deficient in these essential nutrients, especially if you rely heavily on processed foods.

For example, coenzyme Q10 is vital for energy production, yet it’s often depleted by medications like statins. This can cause muscle weakness and a lack of stamina, which only adds to your fatigue.

The Ketogenic Diet: A Better Energy Source

One of the most effective ways to boost your body’s energy production is by adopting a ketogenic diet. This diet shifts your body from burning glucose (sugar) to burning ketones (produced from fat), which creates more ATP and provides a more stable energy source.

When your body enters ketosis, it becomes “fat-adapted,” meaning it can tap into stored fat reserves for fuel. This provides a steady, long-lasting energy supply, without the crashes that come with a carb-heavy diet.

How Medications Affect Your Energy

Certain medications, like statins used to lower cholesterol, can interfere with energy production by blocking the synthesis of coenzyme Q10. This can lead to fatigue, especially in your muscles, as they require high amounts of ATP to function. If you’re on these medications and experiencing tiredness, coenzyme Q10 supplementation might help.

The Power of Nutrient-Dense Foods

If you want to improve your energy levels, focus on consuming nutrient-dense foods. Ultra-processed foods lack the vitamins and minerals your body needs to create energy. Instead, choose foods like red meat, which is rich in nutrients like coenzyme Q10, B vitamins, and iron—nutrients essential for proper mitochondrial function.

Move More: Exercise to Boost Energy

Exercise is another critical component in increasing your body’s energy. Regular physical activity stimulates the production of more mitochondria, improving your body’s ability to create ATP. Pairing this with intermittent fasting can further enhance your energy production by triggering autophagy, a process that recycles old, damaged mitochondria and replaces them with new, more efficient ones.

By understanding the real reasons behind fatigue and making a few simple changes, you can unlock your body’s energy potential and leave chronic tiredness behind. Inspired by Dr. Eric Berg’s video, Why You Are TIRED All the Time.
